Cycleway route plans opposed by school BY GABRIELLE STUART

The first of the $68 million city council major cycleway routes could be delayed due to conflict over a Riccarton road. Work is due to begin this summer on the uni-cycle route, which would run from Canterbury University to the central city. Christchurch Girls’ High School has opposed the route, because it would restrict their plans to expand on Matai St. The school board has asked for a six to eight week delay on the decision, to allow the school to release its long-term master plan. That could involve closing part of Matai St, where the cycle route would run, in order to rebuild and expand earthquake-damaged school buildings.

The Ministry of Education has supported the school board’s request for a delay. A city council staff member who spoke at the community board meeting said that the school could raise objections with the city council, but that would have to be done in a separate process. Board of trustees chairman Mike Lay said that it could be expensive for both the school and the city council if the plans had to be changed in the future. He said that he did not want to interfere with the cycleway development, which he said would be a great thing for the school. He said that the board wanted to make sure that it did not compromise potential development at the school. •Turn to page 2

Cycleway route plans opposed

•From page 1 The plan would involve removing 17 of the 62 car parks outside the school, and he said that parking was already “at a premium” outside the school. The Riccarton-Wigram and Shirley-Papanui community boards have both approved the sections of the draft plan which apply to their wards. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said that he was aware of the objections from the school, but they were too complicated to address at the community board level. He said that the school could make a deputation to the city council when they made the final decision on the route. A date has not yet been set for the cycleway plans to go before the city council. Call for councillors to resign over pool issue that the community spoke with “one voice”. “What is important is that the council unanimously supported the idea of hot saltwater pools for New Brighton.” He said the city council’s financial situation was “not very good”, and exploring all the available options for the project before making a decision was important. “David and I will always advocate for our ward – that is our role, as advocates. That’s what I believe we have done, and will continue to do.” •Pool operating costs, page 5

Cr East said he believed the comments came from a minority, who were “misinformed” about the city council process. He said the decision was just one step of the process, and he was 100 per cent committed to seeing it through. “The proof is in the pudding. If in a couple of years this project is started or completed, we’ll see what they say then.” Cr Livingstone said New Brighton was ‘a passionate place’, and he believed that the comments were driven by a passion for the community. But he said it was important

City councillors David East and Glenn Livingstone have refused calls to step down amid growing anger over handling of the heated saltwater pools legacy project. The city council decided last week not to allocate funding to the New Brighton Legacy Project, until options for private funding were explored. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said that the city council would contribute land to the project, but made no promises beyond that. More than 300 New Brighton

residents declared the suburb a republic to express their anger over the city council decision. Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force founder Tony Brooks said city councillors had let down the suburb. “As far as I am concerned Glenn Livingstone and David East should step down from their positions at the next election as this community has lost all faith in your ability to achieve anything positive for this suburb. You guys have ticked no boxes.” He said he was disappointed by their lack of leadership.

NOR’WEST NEWS

A life of keeping audiences Theatre and stage performance has been in the blood of Martin Howells since he was 20, he is still fully involved in the entertainment business 47 years later. He has just finished directing his 20th children’s theatre show The Pied Piper and will be soon gearing up for his directing role in Geography of Loss – a story written by local playwright, Karen Zelas. Howells speaks with Hunter Calder about his life on, off and behind the stage. Martin, where have you come from and what is your background? I’m originally from the United Kingdom and moved here in 1988. My wife – her parents were New Zealanders and she was from here so I decided to stay on in ‘God’s own country’ – it was better than south-east London. Acting and theatre has always been my life and I was involved with National Theatre of Great Britain and the National Shakespeare Company and have appeared in supporting roles in more than 50 UK television programmes. In New Zealand I have appeared in over 60 performances, I haven’t really counted. I have lived in Christchurch since 1992, and have been professionally employed in the business ever since working with the Christchurch Court Theatre and independently on other productions and plays. What do you think makes you a good director and how do you shape your actors to perform to their best? I think my experience working at high-end level in England has helped me. And knowing what an

actor needs to appreciate as they approach a new role. As a director you need to have a vision and be able to maximise what the piece has to offer – shaping actors, that varies on their experience. You shape things differently, but it depends on who you are working with – one production I’m working on with about 40 to 50 children and it is very different to working with professionals, kids can take a bit longer. But acting is invaluable for a young person’s development – even if they don’t want to go into acting later on. So how long can it take to prepare for a show? It varies, for Court Theatre it can be a three to four-week period, you’re working every day nine to five, but it really depends sometimes you have to work around things, as people have other jobs or families. And what do you like to do in your spare time, where do you like to eat out and what do you tend to do in your other life? I’m 67 now and I love eating out, Chillingworth Rd is my favourite place. I go through phases, I’m into

Mexican food at the moment, and would love to go there. I’m quite a keen cook and I still have some writing projects and video work. I just keep myself happy. So you said you write too? All the children’s plays are my original scripts. All my own adaptations, I’ve written about 15 different scripts for children’s plays and productions. And when it comes to portraying a text story, how do you portray a story visually on stage – it seems as if it would be rather difficult to bring a piece of text to life? It’s a mirror of written work. I would say my real focus is working with adult actors, but working with younger actors is a different joy and you develop the story with the audience. So many young people are not comfortable with theatre, but with anything, when you understand something it becomes part of your life and you appreciate the story-telling point of view. Audiences have to listen and appreciate the story-telling point of view. Similar to how a parent ALL SMILES: Director Martin Howells enjoys a quick break, but not for might read a storybook to a child. long he already has another play lined up.

entertained As the director for Karen Zelas’ Geography of Loss, I am putting my own swing on her poem, it’s a poetic piece that we’re putting on stage. About her Jewish history and family background, history and cultural identity. I will ensure the intent of the poem is maximised. So then, what about your favourite plays and productions, which ones stick out in your memory? I think the ones that I’ve enjoyed the most are the ones that I have done independently as there were less constraints. Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me was a play about three prisoners in the Middle East who had been captured by Palestine people. It was chosen by critics as one of the best productions of their year. It’s rewarding to be your own independent artist to direct something that you have control of. Oh, and the story of a 100-yearold clown Scaramouche Jones was great, it was performed in a circus tent in Hagley Park, and was about his last days of life and his last performance. But 35 years at the Court Theatre it’s too hard to choose a favourite, there has been so many enjoyable plays there. But people always say to me: ‘I loved you as Mr Mole in Wind and the Willows – which I think, I can say modestly, I pulled it off very well. Mr Mole was just so loveable. Another thing I must mention is that it’s great to work with other terrific actors as it becomes a collaboration when you have fantastic cast, Yvonne Mar-

ADVICE: Martin Howells has been in more than 50 supporting roles on UK television, now he’s on the other side of the stage directing plays and productions. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN tin, Geraldine Brophy and Eilish Moran are a couple of key people from the Court Theatre who I have enjoyed working with – it’s great to work with all the fantastic talent. What about your wife Helen, I understand she is also involved with theatre? Helen, my wife, to be honest she does most of the hard work with the kids, she does a fantastic job. We work together a lot now – The Secret of Henry and Alice was very successful, it was fun, we have done it twice now, we are husband and wife and it was a comedy about a

husband and wife – it was great, we even thought about changing the title. My children have also been involved in theatre, my son is doing theatre work in London and my daughter is a vet nurse – they both act very well. Your stories and life sounds so amazing, but I must ask what is it about performing and directing theatre that drives your passion? It’s the joy, everything I do now is for the pure joy of being in theatre and being actively involved. I’m doing it for the love of it more than anything.

No funding will be allocated to the New Brighton heated saltwater pools legacy project until private funding is explored. But with similar pools losing money, finding investors may be difficult. A draft report on the project, released this month, looked at eight heated saltwater pools in Australia and New Zealand. The pools that were heated by power or gas rather than geothermal heat, were operating at a loss or their annual revenue was unknown. Those included the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool in Dunedin, and the Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools. The report said that the operating success of many of the facilities reviewed was based on access to a geothermal heat source. It said that the operational cost of using a traditional heating source in New Brighton would be high.

A more detailed report would be needed to estimate that cost. City councillor David East said the long-term running costs of the facility were a concern, but the city council was exploring alternate heating methods. He said they could include using methane gas from the city landfills to heat the pools. That technique was used to heat the QE II pool, using gas piped from the closed Burwood landfill. The system was installed in 2007, and saved the city council about $1 million in LPG and electricity costs a year. However, most of the system was destroyed in the earthquakes, and the set up of a similar system at the proposed New Brighton pool would be expensive. The city council requested last week that staff develop an expression of interest report for the project. No dates have been set for the report to be released.

An 84-year-old retired nurse has been reunited with a patient she treated 67 years ago in a south Taranaki children’s hospital. In 1947, Dorothy Kitchingman was a high school student volunteering at Hawera Hospital during the school holidays when she met Bernard Hughes, a six-year-old who was receiving treatment for Perthes Disease. “He was very fond of me as nurse. He was desperately lonely, because he wasn’t allowed to be seen by anyone because of the polio epidemic,” said Ms Kitchingman. “I used to take him out in his wheelchair and chat to him to make him feel happy.” After high school, Ms Kitchingman started her training as a nurse and worked in Taranaki, but did not see Mr Hughes again. Mr Hughes was discharged after 13 months, but he did not forget Ms Kitchingman. “She obviously made a big impression on me because I was only young and wasn’t allowed any visitors,” he said. “I took a shine to her, and adopted her as a part of my family.” Ms Kitchingman and her family moved away from Taranaki and spent some time in Manapouri before finally settling in Christchurch. Mr Hughes, now 73, decided to

REUNITED: Trish and Bernard Hughes with Dorothy Kitchingham. track her down by talking to some friends of her family in south Taranaki. He said he had always wondered what had happened to her. “All the family knew how Dorothy had impacted my life. That’s why I was so determined to find her.” He did some digging and found her name and address, said Ms Kitchingman. But Mr Hughes said he was apprehensive to contact Ms Kitchingman, as he didn’t know if she was alive or if she wanted to be found. After a few phone conversations, he travelled down to Christchurch from his south Taranaki home with his wife, Trish, to meet Ms Kitchingman. “He brought me this beautiful gift of a photo album. There was a photograph of me as a nurse and himself in his little chair when he was young. And it’s got the story. It’s a beautifully done album,” said Ms Kitchingman. The pair have agreed not to wait another 67 years before seeing each other again.

Belgian student returns home The Rotary Club of Papanui has said goodbye to Manon Coline, a Belgian Rotary youth exchange student hosted by the club who has just returned to Belgium after a year in New Zealand. They tell her story.

Manon, who, with her ready smile and cheerful expression has delighted Papanui Rotary for just over a year, flew out on Friday to her home town in Belgium. For her it was an adventure to come all the way to New Zealand and she has made the most of her time here. She was boarded with three separate families and each of them found her a delightful house guest. And she collected a blazer of badges; each one of them representing a separate experience. One, a fern leaf, came from the lapel of the Prime Minister’s suit; he was impressed with her warm, outgoing personality and her complete involvement in every experience. She arrived in New Zealand in July last year, knowing very little about the country.

to paint; it was something I had never had the opportunity to do before,” she said. Manon also had enjoyed the wider social opportunities offered by the school. She played volleyball and basketball and went dragon boat racing. “In Belgium I would have to join a club to play these sports – they are just not offered at school,” she said. During her year in New Zealand Manon travelled a lot. “I saw all the country except for Invercargill and the East Coast around Gisborne,” she said. In some cases she travelled with other Rotary exchange students but her host families also made sure that she saw as much of the country as possible. Adventures included white water rafting on the Shotover, tramping the Milford Track and various days skiing. She also had a fortnight in Australia to attend an International Rotary Convention and to explore the Gold Coast. Back in Belgium Manon will start her university course in tourism.

“I was briefed on the Maori culture and also on the landscape but not what it was really like to live in New Zealand,” she said. While in New Zealand, Manon went to Papanui High School, which she really enjoyed. Here she was able to take subjects that will help her in her chosen career in tourism. Her subjects included economics, tourism, English, painting and hospitality. “They are all subjects, which, except for English, I would have had no chance of studying in Belgium. For the first time I had a chance

Produce co-ops amalgamate BY HUNTER CALDER

The St Albans Fruit and Veggie Co-op has joined forces with the Shirley Co-op and are now packing fresh produce at one location. St Albans Co-op volunteer-organiser Matt Holmes said the St Albans Co-op had moved from St

Matthews Church to Rutland Street Church and had been joined by the Shirley Co-op to pack produce at one location. St Albans woman Leanne Whitteker said she had been with the St Albans Co-op since it started and liked to support the community as a volunteer.

YOUR CHILDREN ARE AMAZING ALREADY. WE JUST HELP THEM PROVE IT.

The fruit and veggie co-op is a partnership between Christ Church Cathedral, community and public health, and communities in Christchurch – there are seven fruit and vegetable co-ops across the city that provide more than 2000 packs of fresh and affordable produce every week.

Artists help bring Xmas BY GABRIELLE STUART

Break dancers, DJs and graffiti artists gathered in Shirley to inspire children and bring Christmas to people in need. About 200 people from across the country gathered at the Shirley Intermediate School Hall for the Break Mission dance workshops and competition. Donations of clothing or food were requested instead of an entry fee, and more than a dozen boxes of donated goods were collected. The food will be delivered in food parcels to people in the Shirley community who are “socially isolated” at Christmas time. The clothing was distributed to the community through a clothing exchange at the MacFarlane Park Neighbourhood Centre last week. The lack of an entry fee meant that the event relied on volunteers, and organiser Berwyn Mason said that more than 20 community groups and agencies contributed to make the event possible. Christchurch dancer Leo Zhay won the dance competition, followed by Jaroslav Provazek, also from Christchurch.

BELFAST – GAINING GOOD MOMENTUM

‘deadline sale’ is becoming an increasingly popular option for marketing a property. This method is fundamentally the same as Auction and Tender except it allows maximum flexibility for the vendor to accept what they like when they like. “The property is offered for sale with no price and a deadline date which the offers need to be submitted by (e.g. two to four weeks) on the basis that the vendor reserves the right to accept an offer at anytime before then.” Buyers do not need to be in a “cash” position to have their offer presented which

deadline, allowing the owner to be able to make decisions in their own time without pressure. Properties in the northwest areas of the city are always in high demand and there has been no letting up over the winter months, with everyday enquiries coming into the Belfast office from many purchasers seeking properties. Alison and Lorraine invite anyone who is wanting to sell or buy a home or section to contact Mike Pero Real Estate Belfast, Shop 6, 812 Main North Road, phone 423 1535 or Alison 0274 313 586, Lorraine 0274 984 393.

lison Helms opened her Mike Pero franchise in Belfast at the end of February and reports “an overwhelming response from the locals. People are getting to know we’re here now,” she says. With 12 years’ experience in the industry, Alison has built up an extensive database of clients and offers her skills and expertise to both buyers and sellers all over the city. She joined Mike Pero in February 2013, and says it was the “best move she had ever made”. “I like it because it’s a very professional company and people see it as a trustworthy brand. The lower fees also make it more beneficial for our sellers. The headline fee is 2.95 per cent as opposed to most other national brands at around four per cent. In simple terms this can mean a saving of around $4000 on a typical Christchurch home when it comes time to sell. In addition, the client gets a $6000 marketing package which includes a TV commercial on either TV One or TV3. Alison has recently taken on another agent, Lorraine Sheard, who has 21 years’ experience in real estate. Their combined

skills and knowledge means clients can be confident of getting the best possible service, Alison says. “Our aim is to get the best price for our vendor.” She notes that selling a property by

means there is no expense incurred by them prior to having their offer accepted. This method will provide an opportunity for a motivated buyer, prior to the deadline, to get in quickly and present the vendor with a favourable offer prior to the close of

rom beauty, make-up and hair specialists, massage therapy, a bakery, local pharmacy, mini supermarket, Kids first Kindergarten, restaurants and takeaway outlets to two auto mechanical, repair and service businesses, a NZ Sheep breeders association, of which both shopping complexes have local businesses committed to their Norwest residents. The fact that Kendal Avenue boasts two shopping centres, at the start and towards the end of the avenue (Charlcott Street), is surprising as originally when Kendal School was opened in 1962 with 13 classrooms and 481 pupils, historical records show there was one state rental area within the school boundaries and no shopping facilities.

Provision was made for shop sites to be built on sections almost opposite the school gates; some of these buildings remain today. The school closed in January 2014, but a 600m cycle track around the Kendal School Grounds is still open to the community. It was originally designed for four-10 year olds to learn to ride on a safe off road development. A community church, St Timothy’s Church on Kendal Avenue recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was dedicated in 1963 by Anglican Bishop Warren. Kendal Avenue (originally named Kendal Street) is surrounded by some of Christchurch’s most interesting geographical history. The area was originally part of a farm

of approximately 1700 acres (700 hectares) owned by William Boag (1824-1898). The original large homestead was close to the present water tower in Burnside Park, at the start of Kendal Avenue. It was surrounded by the trees his family planted, and as Christchurch expanded out from the city centre the farm was eventually subdivided for roading and housing development. At the top end of Memorial Ave opposite Burnside Park, Kendal Avenue is a street that slices across a general area of the northwest of the city. The street effectively links the suburbs of Burnside and Bishopdale on the geographical border of Wairakei Road. A drive along Kendal Avenue winds around a quiet leaf tree lined street of high density suburbia. The leafy image of the geography complements the ‘green belt’ focus of the surrounding suburbs; there are a number of notable heritage trees listed in the City Plan for Bryndwr Road, Flay Reserve and Greers Road. The urban sprawl of the late 1940’s - 1960’s resulted in Burnside and Bryndwr becoming two of the quickest growing areas in New Zealand; this trend was accelerated by the Group Housing Scheme consisting of new subdivisions and World War 2 ex-servicemen returning to build family homes. The suburb of Burnside, of which Kendal Ave is located, was named because of the small creeks that encompass the headwaters of the Waimairi Stream. The Scottish meaning for the name Burnside is “by the side of small stream”.

Gout

For gout sufferers, the inflammatory affliction can cause feelings of embarrassment, denial, guilt and a lot of pain. Issue 3 of Pacific Peoples Health describes how New Zealand has been tagged the ‘Gout Capital of the World’ with many people suffering from the form of arthritis, caused by elevated uric acid levels in the blood.

G

rowing research shows genetics is the main reason gout is far more prevalent in Pacific and Maori than other ethnicities, with six per cent of Maori and eight per cent Pacific people affected compared to three per cent of Europeans, and men are more likely to get gout than women. Due to the stigma surrounding gout, some people feel ashamed to admit they have it. Arthritis NZ Chief Executive Officer Sandra Kirby suspects a number of myths

about gout contribute to the shame. “Included in those myths about gout is the concept of too much rich food and too much alcohol,” Sandra explains. “While food and alcohol do contribute for Maori and Pacific people, there’s a strong genetic connection. There’s also the dangerous misconception that there’s not much you can do if you get gout and it will go away anyway.” University of Otago Associate Professor Tony Merriman became interested in gout

five times. He stresses that prevention is obviously key when dealing with gout. “Prevention relieves the burden on the sufferer and their family and, given gout primarily affects working age men, this will have positive effects on Pacific and Maori communities, and lead to reduction of health disparities,” he says. Although a serious problem, gout is preventable, and it can be effectively treated by medicines. Early diagnosis and treatment are important as untreated gout can cause major and permanent joint damage. Uric acid medicines are available to bring uric acid levels down, which need to be taken daily even during a gout attack, while gout attack medicines treat gout attacks – these medicines are taken when a gout attack is coming on or if in pain. Keeping to a healthy weight can also help reduce uric acid and therefore gout, as can eating three meals each day, choosing small servings of meat and seafood, eating low-fat dairy foods daily and drinking lots of water, and less alcohol. Pharmacists, GPs or doctor’s nurses can help determine the right gout treatment for each individual, and patients are more likely to make lifestyle changes if they understand their condition. NOR’WEST NEWS

Come and see why Breens has become a lead school in Education. Join us during our open night and see how your child will benefit from the modern, progressive, proven and exciting approach to learning that is Breens. Breens has been identified as an ‘Exemplar’ school on the Christchurch Education Landscape. Breens has had a number of case studies produced in recognition for the success the school has achieved. Our youth deserve an education which embraces current ‘Global Best Practice’ teaching approaches. The exciting world your child will be going into requires skills which need to be modelled and learnt during your child’s education. Choose your child’s school carefully. Breens is an ideal choice for your child’s education. Not only do we have dedicated, competent, passionate teachers training and devoted to teaching preadolescent students but have amazing specialist teaching spaces which include Foods, Textiles, Workshop, Science Lab and Visual Art rooms. A radio station, Music performance area, age appropriate activities and massive sports fields. Our famous Breens Values. We run a strong values based school where the learner is the centre. Breens has a powerful and genuine Values programme which everyone follows. Our school bases everything we do around our five values of Belonging, Beauty, Boldness, Bravery and Brilliance. Each value has its own identity and set of attributes which helps establish the code and expectations which is our school. Knowledge of your child and their learning needs is crucial. The ability for your child to meet their potential and to recognise the contribution they can make to society will empower them to be the best they can be. Our values are an effective tool to help develop your child’s potential and allow them to shine. The biggest difference to your child’s learning will be what the teacher does! At Breens we understand this research and our collaborative teaching model empowers our teachers to be the best they can be for your child. We run a school wide collaborative teaching approach which will see your child and whanau having a close connection to one teacher who is your contact person and who will know your child really well (we pride ourselves on having strong connections with our families). Your child will then have two others teachers who will work closely

with them to help with creating learning opportunities and to create a ‘rich and responsive’ curriculum at ‘the point of challenge’. We call this approach ‘the power of three’, which means three teachers bring three different solutions to teaching. This model works very well for we structure our teams carefully and run a strong mentoring and coaching programme. The flip side of this approach sees the isolation of teaching disappear. Our students, teachers, staff and parents tell us they prefer this model to the traditional model. Breens is extremely well resourced with computers and ICT capability. We are fibre speed and fully wireless. We have BYOD capability and have run this for a few years now. We have more than one device between two students which include All in One, Mac Air books, I pads, Tablets Chromebooks plus desk tops. We are a Google Apps for education school and empower of students to use the right tool for the right job. We run Dashboard to monitor usage and have a strong filtering system. Our students have excellent access and are well prepared to produce work in a range of mediums. Education globally is changing for the better. Teachers are now fully able to embrace the opportunities ICT provide ie learning any time in any place. We are better prepared than ever to embrace agency (students able to guide their own learning more). Breens has managed to adopt these cutting edge approaches and combining best teaching practices with our strong values culture provides perfect learning opportunities for all learners. We still have that special family feel yet have cleverly managed to adapt our learning spaces through adopting careful educational theory based on research and have resourced our school with furniture and ICT equipment to enable the best learning possible for your child. The changes we have implemented have resulted in higher levels of engagement, students more motivated, improved achievement levels and a focused atmosphere around the school. Please join us on the evening of Tuesday 29th July during our open night and view our Brilliant School.

Gut flora balance helps relieve autism symptoms It is well known that stress can cause a stomach ache, but the relationship works both ways, says a pediatrician. Researchers are starting to show that a bacterial imbalance in the gut can cause mental health problems, says Dr Leila Masson, who specialises in treating children on the autistic spectrum. Although an imbalance does not cause autism, getting the balance right can help reduce some of the anguish. “I have repeatedly seen autistic children become more settled and less anxious when this imbalance is resolved,” says the New Zealand pediatrician. “We are not talking about curing autism. It is about treating some of the problems that come with it.” She says that in the past, agitation was seen as a symptom of autism. “Now we know it is caused by painful inflammation of the gut. If you reduce the pain, children sleep better and are calmer. “The New Zealand

pain relievers. Chondroitin sulphate is a natural part of cartilage and connective tissue. Researchers have found if they supply the body with extra chondroitin from shark cartilage this helps by supplying nutrients for the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue. It acts like a fluid magnet, drawing fluids and nutrients into the cartilage, enabling it to grow and be replaced. Glucosamine and chondroitin in sufficient amounts appears to have a synergistic affect and may speed the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue. speed up recovery from colds and flus, pneumonia, tuberculosis, herpes, shingles, urinary or yeast infections and much more. It has also been found beneficial for chronic fatigue syndrome, low energy levels, exotic and deadly tropical diseases, two types of leukaemia and some cancers. It has also been found to be an effective cardiovascular tonic. Olive leaf extract is so effective that too high a dose initially may make you feel worse. This is due to too many microorganisms dying quicker than the body can process. This side effect can be minimised if you follow our dosage. Also drinking pure steam distilled water and/or herbal teas can be quite effective. Visit Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, or phone 388 5757 for more info.

steoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is also known as degenerative joint disease, and it is characterized by loss of cartilage and joint degeneration causing pain, joint stiffness and reduced mobility. An essential building block for cartilage is glucosamine. Healthy joints actually make their own glucosamine, but only produce cartilage when glucosamine is plentiful Researchers have found taking sufficient glucosamine appears to trigger the joints own production of glucosamine and formation of new cartilage in many cases. It has also been shown to reduce pain and increase joint mobility better than taking pharmaceutical

HEALTH

Ten foods to boost Employment your immunity opportunities The colder months can be a challenging time to stay healthy. Jane Logie has a solution Winter is a time of year when germs decide to do the rounds and cause trouble. Here are 10 immune supportive nutrients and herbs which, when included in your diet on a regular basis, can help support the immune system.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is especially important to immune function. We need to obtain it through our diet as we are one of the few species that have the inability to manufacture it, and is essential to replenish on a daily basis. Vitamin C plays a key role in the manufacture of white blood cells, an integral part of the immune system, and with any infection it is rapidly depleted. Foods high in vitamin C include chillies, red capsicum, berries, oranges and lemons.

Zinc

Zinc is an important nutrient in fending off bugs. Zinc is found in every body cell and a deficiency in this mineral is a sign of recurrent infections as a result of impaired immune function. Hence adequate zinc levels are essential for good health. Foods high in zinc include shellfish, almonds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. \

Vitamin D

HEALTHY BOOST: Vitamin C, found in foods such as oranges, is especially important to immune function. New Zealand is considered to have low levels.

Echinacea

Echinacea is an immune builder and modulator, meaning it helps rebalance the immune system. Drinking echinacea tea one or two times a day can help support the immune system, and studies show that echinacea can reduce the severity and duration of the flu and common colds.

Vitamin D is important for the protection against viruses, especially in winter when we get fewer sunshine hours. Vitamin D is best obtained through exposure to sunshine, about 10-15 minutes a day—especially during summer, to build up vitamin D stores. Other good sources of vitamin D are cod liver oil, cold-water fish, butter and egg yolks. Vegetables are low in vitamin D, but the best sources are dark green leafy vegetables.

Garlic is a strong antimicrobial, acting on bacteria and viruses, so including it in nutritious dishes is important in colder weather. It is best only slightly cooked as the strongest medicinal component, allicin, is reduced when overcooked. It is a natural antibacterial often used to prevent or combat colds, flu, bronchitis and respiratory ills.

Selenium

Ginger

Selenium plays a vital role in the development of all white blood cells, the gobblers of disruptive bugs, and a selenium deficiency can result in depressed immune function. Food sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, oats and wheatgerm. The selenium level of food is directly related to the level of selenium in the soil, of which

Garlic

Ginger contains chemicals that target colds and viruses. It can also help suppress a cough. Ginger promotes perspiration, therefore has the ability to help reduce a fever, as well as being a sedative and a pain reliever. Add ginger slices or shredded ginger to peppermint tea and sip three or four times a day when sick.

Cranberry

Studies show that cranberry has immune stimulating effects, aiding in lowering the frequency of cold and flu symptoms. They are a good source of vitamins C and E. Drinking cranberry juice on a regular basis can help support your overall health.

Peppermint tea

Drink peppermint tea once or twice a day for immunestimulating benefits. Peppermint is rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, giving it the ability to strengthen the immune system, as well as relieving symptoms of the common cold and flu. It also helps the respiratory and digestive systems.

Probiotics

Probiotics can help reduce the duration and frequency of upper respiratory tract infections and can be especially helpful for children. Try eating a natural unsweetened yoghurt containing probiotics such as acidophilus on a regular basis to help keep the digestive system healthy, which will in turn keep the immune system healthy too. Including some of these 10 nutrients and herbs in your diet can protect your body against viruses and bugs this winter. •Jane Logie is a herbalist and chef

The Enchanted Garden

T

is unique

he Enchanted Garden is unique in the sense that we are a very small centre compared to the big franchise preschools of today. Our separate nursery is licenced for 10 under-two’s with three teachers, and our preschool is licenced for 23 over-two’s with three teachers. This means that each child is given individualised attention and care by teachers who know them well. We are also unique because our teaching team consists of fully trained early childhood teachers. Current research states that “only trained teachers working with small groups of children can provide the highest standard of education and care”. At The Enchanted Garden, we are proud to tick both of these boxes. Read our fantastic 2013 ERO report online and see

If you want outstanding high quality education and care for your child, in a warm and nurturing home-like setting, then The Enchanted Garden is the place for you.

igger’s Montessori Nursery and Preschool has opened on the corner of Harewood Road and Matson’s Avenue. Three and a half years in the design and build has culminated in state-of-the-art nursery, junior school and preschool. Care and attention to detail has enabled the creation of a beautiful building offering a calm, bright, spacious indoor/outdoor environment. Low child to qualified teacher ratio and our teaching platform offer a stimulating learning experience, development and refinement of the senses and a care of oneself and the environment. Business partners Clare Enberg and Pam Watts have purposely built Tigger’s with space, light, facilitating refinement of

gross and fine motor skills, creativity and development towards independence for each little Tigger’s preschooler. The emphasis on self-awareness and care of the environment enhanced by an extensive outdoor play area is evident, with a soft fall track, hillocks, adventure play forts, boat and water play areas, garden and sandpits, which all offer an exciting invitation for the children to enjoy the indoor and outdoor interplay within their daily programme. Tigger’s Montessori Nursery and Preschool is open 7.30am to 5.30pm from Monday to Friday. Enquiries and visitors are welcome. To make an appointment with the staff at Tigger’s Nursery, phone 03 352 5025.

Booster seats for children

T

he government changes to the laws around child restraints means the changes will require mandatory use of a child restraint for children until their seventh birthday, and the use of an appropriate child restraint if there is one available until their eighth birthday. What this means for you is that children aged between 5 and 7 that have moved to the vehicle seatbelt on their own will need to return to a booster seat. Plunket and other child safety advocates continue to encourage booster seat use for

even longer, as research shows that until a child is around 148cm tall, they need a booster seat to get best protection in a crash. Booster seats are readily available from many local retailers, including Plunket who both hire and sell appropriate seats for your children of all ages.

Does the mother watch critical or disappointed as the baby pulls itself up again and again and falls down again and again? On the contrary, there is laughter and delight because the baby is learning, and learning is noticing what needs adjusting and how things work. We can save ourselves a considerable amount of pain when we take a baby’s approach to learning - less time judging ourselves as succeeding or failing and more time simply noticing what needs adjusting. Add a packet of onion soup mix and sliced mushrooms. Delicious!’’ Another great way to cook almost any vegetable is as tempura, which is a classic Japanese dish of deep fried battered vegetables (like zucchini, onions, eggplants, carrots, green peppers, sweet potatoes, string beans, broccoli, mushrooms). Vegetables with a very high water content are generally not suitable, however, as they tend to release water into the batter while cooking. The veges need to be cut thin enough to cook in the same time it takes the batter to become crispy. To make the batter you need 1 cup plain flour, 1 egg, and 1 cup ice cold water. Beat the egg in a bowl and stir in the iced water. Add the flour and mix lightly with a wooden spoon handle or chopstick to avoid over mixing (having lumps in the batter is a hallmark of tempura). o ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements. Ventilation includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases while humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or is ineffective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. We breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air every day. It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes

stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation; however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.
